i Fillies and Mares Seek ,000 Prized La Tosca Purse at Belmont Park Today r ° of ™ a a as a r ° of s c *■ " . is j * J f J j J J j ! j ] ] i I i i Mrs. Ames Tops Field That t ►- Embraces Plucky Maud and i Moon Maiden, Among Others I i ELMONT, L. I., N. Y., June 7.— Tomor- ] row, Friday, will be the first stakeless day j the current Belmont Park meeting. The i Westchester Racing Association is offering an overnight handicap, styled the La Tosca, . the feature of the eight-race program, J and this mile test for fillies and mares carries ,000 in prize money. Also, the class | the quintet entered makes this event a stake in everything but name and technicality. Longchamps Farms Mrs. Ames is top weight of the select group with 122 pounds. She is followed in the impost by Plucky Maud, 118; Moon Maiden, 114; Legend Bearer, 112, and Sirlette, 106. G. L. Smith ] scheduled to ride the lightweight, Ted 1 Atkinson is on Legend Bearer and Bobby ] Permane will be aboard Plucky Maud. , Other riders are not yet determined, many • being now in Kentucky for the Derby. Mrs. Ames looms a logical choice in this J test on the strength of her courageous ef- , fort behind Apache and Devil Diver in Mondays Toboggan Handicap. In that , event Mrs. Ames fought for the early pace with Breezing Home, disposed of that good j sprinter, then succumbed to the two lead- , ing male sprint stars in the final eighth, . but not without giving a demonstration of , class and courage. She picks up consid- . erable additional weight over that effort, . but is meeting her own sex, which is generally expected to be sufficient compen- . sation. Plucky Maud, who will carry considerable public support, worked shortly before yesterdays Withers, skipping six furlongs in 1:13 and a little change, with Permane in the saddle. The filly looked most impressive in her trial, and the move gained luster from the performances of Polynesian, Pavot and the other colts in the stake which followed. Plucky Maud looked fully as capable as the three-year-old stars. Moon Maiden has seemed a faint shadow of herself thus far this year and might prefer a longer distance in any case. Sirlette likes the Belmont track, but appears a trifle outclassed and the same applies to Legend Bearer. Another small field is slated to vie in the Doublet Purse, mile and one-sixteenth supporting feature that follows La Tosca on the program. Only four three-year-olds have been named to compete in this event, with Cave Man and Salto carrying 116, conceding three to Baron Jack and Thor. Twenty maiden juveniles are to scamper down the Widener course in the fourth race ►- i I i ] j i and there are several potential stars in this I band, including the pair Tom Smith will saddle for Maine Chance Farm, They Say j and Par Plus, the fashionably-bred Cain Hoy Stable duo of His Grace and Water Level and several others. It should be an J interesting contest to watch for future i reference.
