HALLOWMAS FAILS TO DELIVER THE GOODS. St. Valentine and Monaco Maid Have the Race Between Them Judge McDowell Is 111. New Orleans, La., February 20. Hallowmas, a Derby aspirant, received something of a set back today when he was handily beaten by St. Valentine and Monaco Maid. He was the favorite over them in the fourth race at the old track, despite a disadvantage in the weights, and was smartly backed at even money. He was outrun from start to finish, St. Valentine and Monaco Maid having it between them throughout. The filly started out to make the running and set a lively pace, to which St. Valentine hung on much more closely than has been the case in most of his races here. He caught Monaco Maid just after making the far turn, but she put up a game struggle and, though he led her a neck on the last turn, she squared for home again in the lead, but in the last furlong he ran her down and beat her out a half length in a hard drive. It was a bad day for the ring, as the backers seemed to have things pretty much as they desired. Kickshaw brought hotne another purse for Tony Llcalzl in the fifth, though it was all he could do to beat out Hyacinth, one of the best backed "good things" of the meeting. Phil Chlnn has protested the bidding up of Con-suelo, winner of yesterdays last race on the ground that the negro who did the bidding was irresponsible. He Is known around the track as "Long-Taw, the crap-shooter," and was a rubber for George Hill until he sold out his stable. Presiding Judge Clarence McDowell was absent from ills post today and his place was filled by Secretary Nathanson. Judge MPowell is confined to his room with dyspesia.
