CABLEGRAM MAKES A SUCCESSFUL DEBUT. Small Crowd, But Brisk Betting at City Park Lord Provost Wins Race at Start. New Orleans, La., February 20. Threatening weather kept down the attendance at City Park this afternoon. Those that did put in an appearance however, were there for business and speculation was, brisk. With four of the seven races going to the favorites, the chances are that the bookmakers lid not lay up much on the afternoons business. Hain fell heavily after the fourth race. Lord Provost, the winner of the closing race, was Rent away running with a lead of two lengths. It was the first really bad start starter Cassidy has made at the meeting. Dr. Kyle showed his highly tried Cablegram in the second race, a maiden affair for three-year-olds, and be edt won. It was his first appearance with colors up. Last spring Cablegram was the highest tried two-year-old on the grounds andjie was shipped east with the expectation of winning some of the rich prizes offered on the metropolitan circuit, .able-gram, however, was taken sick shortly after his arrival in New York and thrown out of training. Pat Nichols, a stable man, broke his leg while schooling the four-year-old James Reed through the field at City Tark this morning. , J. S. Bratton has sold to A. Gehrke on private terms, Brown Vail, Apple Sweet and Leila Hunter. They will be raced at Suburban Park. Harry Gardner lias sold to L. L. Lamar the horse Brand New. The price paid was and 00 out of the first purse. Gardner presented the three-year-old filly Polly Forrest to Bob Parker. She was shipped to the latters plantation up the river and will be bred to a trotting stallion. Green B. Morris has repurchased the horses Bryan and Clifton Forge which were sold by auction Saturday last. He will dispose of the pair later on at private sale. P. M. Civill also bought back the hordes Orly and Foreigner.
