HORSEMAN SEEKS ENLIGHTENMENT. "Will somebody please explain to me." said a horseman at the Gravesend track to a New York Sun man, "why it is that I cannot make use of ray own money in accordance with my wishes without having other people step in and stop me? If I want to bet on a swimming match or a horse race, it seems to me Ive got a right to in this free country, as theres no harm in betting, and the American raee is made up of speculators anyway. Then why are other folks allowed to get up on their hind legs and yell against betting on horses when nobody compels them to go to the tracks and nobody is taking a dollar out of their pockets? It will le pretty tough picking when another fellow can tell me what I shall or shall, not do with my own coin as long as 1 havent taken it from him in the first place. These reformers are always butting in. but do you notice that nobody ever interferes with their methods of getting a living? If a man doesnt believe in betting nobody .will force htm to speculate, hut Is it fair for him to stop others who can make a good living out of racing and ask no favors?"
