MADDEN APOLOGIZES AND PAYS FINE. New York, March 23. John E. Madden, the Kentucky turfman, appeared before Justice Burr in the Supreme Court, Brooklyn, yesterday, and by public apology and the payment of a 50 fine purged himself of the contempt iu which he was adjudged when he refused to answer certain questions put to him. iu Saratoga last summer by a commissioner lppointed to take testimony iu the suit for separation brought by Mrs. Madden. Madden originally was. sentenced to a term in jail, and left New York state. Recently his lawyers secured a modification of the penalty, and yesterdays proceedings resulted.
