FAST MILERS ELIGIBLE FOR NEW STAKE. The- Brighton Beach Racing Association has made an interesting proposal in announcing a big stake at a mile, with 5,000 added, the contest to be limited to the horses nominated for the Brighton Handicap. In addition, as special inducement for a heart-breaking pace from start to finish, the winner will be given ,500 additional if the Brighton Beach track record of 1:38 is beaten, or ,000 additional If the American record of J:37e is lowered. In effect this is offering 0,000 for a new mile record. It is a high price, but records are keenly coveted by track officials and the race la one that will evoke tremendous excitement and be amply repaid by the big crowd sure to be in attendance. It seems that the best course would have been to throw the race open to all coiners, but at that here is a vast amount of extreme speed in the Brighton Handicap list of nominations and a field leaving little to be desired is likely to go to the post picked from Santa Catalina, Glorifier, Tiptoe, Flip Flap, Bad News, Miss Crawford, Knight Errant, Tokalon, Whimsical, Hamburg Belle, Dandelion, Kurokl, Bohemian, Bulls Eye, Kiamesha, Ormon-dale. Cairngorm, First Mason, Inquisitor, Perverse, Rams Horn. Dolly Spanker and Von Tromp. There Is not a horse In this list that cannot easily beat 1:40 and what the fleetest of them can do when put to the extreme of their speed is a problem that may be solved in the great race to come off some day this week. The fastest horse eligible so far as records at the distance go, is Kiamesha. This mare Is by her latest performances, in rare form at present, and may be able to run up to her record performance of 1:37s at Belmont Park last fall. The holder of the second best record for the distance is the three-year-old Inquisitor, which won fame as a brilliant miler when he won the Sheepshead Bay Handicap last month in 1:37J. On that occasion Von Tronip was beaten by a head and must therefore be set down as being able to run a very fast mile when conditions favor. In the same race Dolly Spanker was beaten but little more than a half length and, while not a genuine stayer, would have to be considered with respect at a mile. For the last two years Hamburg Belle has been deemed practically the queen of the turf at this distance. Time and again has she shown that It was mere exercise for her to run a mile in 1:40 or better with high weights up. but so far this year she has hardly shown at her best. Ormondale Is" a colt that has run In a fashion this year suggesting staying Is not his forte, but his speed is enormous and trained for sprinting he might have proved Invincible as a miler. Whimsical and Flip Flap are two fillies, that can travel at a very rapid rate. Tokalon is easily a 1:38 horse If not too heavily weighted. Perverse at her best Is better than Whimsical and Flip Flap, and Tiptoe is not much behind tills trio as her three-quarters in l:12i with 110 pounds up, Saturday, attests. Rams Horn is another remarkably fast horse. Dandelion, Bohemian and Cairngorm are also of those that have a chance at a mile in any sort of company. The conditions of the proposed race must be awaited as the yet unknown factor. If the race is to be a handicap the weights originally assigned the horses in the Brighton may be continued for it, but it Is more likely to be under special weights.
