1 ARTHUR CUMMER WINS THE BUFFALO STAKES Success Due to Lees Energetic Riding La Pucelle Runs a Mile in 1:39. Buffalo, N. Y., July 14. Arthur Cummer, masterfully ridden by the colored jockey Lee today, captured the Buffalo Stakes by a head from Little Mike, the early pacemaker. Rebounder finished third with the heavily backed favorite, Hans Wagner, in the ruck. Little Mike was the quickest at the start and dashed away around the first turn to set the pace. He stole a long lead while going down the backstretch with the others straining bard to reach him. Arthur Cummer moved up when turning into the stretch and began what seemed to be hopeless pursuit of the leader. Lee was not to be denied, however, and urging his mount with bands, whip and heels, gradually cut down Little Mikes advantage until fifty yards of the wire found him on even terms. Both hung together for a stride or two and then in the final stride Arthur Cummer secured the head advantage which gave him the race. La Pucelle electrified the half holiday crowd by running the mile in the owners handicap in 1:39 and lowering the colors of the odds-on favorite Martin, Doyle. Swain rode La Pucelle faultlessly, while Alex on the favorite, by his bungling inefficiency, aided the defeat of the better horse today.
