ONLY ONE BLACK HORSE TO WIN DERBY. In England the other day a number of veteran turfmen were discussing this seasons two-year-olds and the Derby of 1907. When SUeve Gallions name was mentioned, the curious fact was brought out that only one black horse ever won the Derby. That was Smoleusko, in 1813. Slieve Gallion Is a black, and there were mauy in the group who were inclined to the belief that he will be the second black horse to win the blue ribbon. It was also observed that, though the house of Stanley has been so long connected with the turf, the St. Leger has never yet witnessed the victory of the black jacket and white cap. It has been almost as bad in the Derby, no Stanley having won it since 1787, when it was carried off by the famous Sir Peter Teazle.
