ONLY ONE GREY HORSE TO WIN DERBY. Only one grey horse ever won the English Derby, this being Gustavus, in 1S21, but there have lieen several amongst the placed horses, such as Sir John Lades Chop, second in 1781; Lord Granthams Carlo Khan and Grdntham, second in 1784 and 1785; Hector. anotlur grey, ran third in 1800; Lord Darlingtons Raby was second in 1818; Exquisite made a great light of it with Frederick in 1829; and in 1S3S Lord George Bentincks Grey Momus, which started first favorite, ran third to the 30 to 1 shot, Amato. Of late years the most conspicuous greys have been Lord Zetlands Grey Friars, which disappointed his friends sadly, and the illfated French horse, Holocauste, whose tragic end excited the pity of every person on the course. One grey filly has won the Oaks, namely, Scotia, in 1802, but the St. Leger was won by the grey filly Hollandaise In 177S.
