IMPROVEMENT IN ATTENDANCE AT SALEM. Ralem, N. II.. July 17. There was a big improvement in the attendance and the sport at Rockingham Park today. The hot weather in Boston caused a large number of people to journey to the track. Four of the live races were keenly contested and resulted in close finishes. The most notable of these was the second in which New York lieat Ostrich a short head for first money. Wiley, on New York, rode a good race. He rated the aged horse well and waited until the stretch was readied when he let out a few links, catching Ostrich a few yards from home. The feature of the day. the Portsmouth Handicap of ,000, at seven furlongs, for three-year-olds, went to J. A. Drakes Wes. This was Wes fourth successive victory and todays race was captured by him as easily as the others, lenrhyn, his stable companion, acted as pacemaker. Andrew Millers Momentum had to le hard ridden to leat Big Store by a neck in the first race. Cull led his company all the way in the mile race, but had to he hustled along to withstand Huddys rush when Hearing home. At the close of the meeting It. -J. Walden will ship to Sheepshead Hay while the stables of J. A. Drake and Phii Chinn will be sent to Saratoga.
