INVINCIBLE TO DANDELION. HITCHCOCKS COLT TAKES THE BRIGHTON FEATURE IN HEAVY GOING. Jaunty Falls and Breaks a Shoulder Nannie Hodge Defeats Far West and Spoils a Coup Gold Lady Attracts Attention. New York, August 2. Francis II. nitchcocks Dandelion finally won a race. The going hail no terrors for the lightly-weighted Ilainburg four-year-old and he won the Invincible Handicap of ,300 at one mile and a quarter in a close finish, after an errorless ride on the part of jockey Sewell. For a horse that has actually started favorite in the three biggest handicaps of the year, the price quoted for todays stake. In which he was opposed by mediocre opposition, was an amazingly liberal one. A number of big commissions went on him however, and his connections must have fully recompensed themselves for previous losses. Web footers held sway this dreary afternoon. The slowest, deepest, wettest and most laborious going seen here in a decade prevailed at the Brighton course. Many well backed horses were successful, but the betting contingent generally were heavy losers. Jaunty, favorite in the two-year-old race, which carried nearly as much money as Dandelion, stumbled and fell a furlong from the finish, sustaining injuries so serious that it was at first thought necessary to destroy her. On the advice of a veterinary who pronounced her shoulder blade fractured, W. II. Landman, the owner, decided to make an attempt to save the game Ingoldsby Tweedledum filly for the stud and the horse van was accordingly requisitioned to haul her away. Nannie Hodge was a lukewarm favorite for the first race aud. .carried little of the smart money". To Sewells skilfull ride was due her nose victory over the badly handled Far West, which was backed for a fortune. In the second race. Gold Lady, also neglected in the betting, ran past the, leaders at the end, showing such unexpected speed and stamina, after being apparently hopelessly beaten at the half, that the majority of horsemen present began to look her over in the paddock. A poor lot competed in the mile and sixteenth selling. Donna won out after the contenders, Water Tank and Cholk Iledrick had put themselves out of commission by bolting on the last turn. Two successive big upsets followed the running of the stake in the victories of Flowaway and 0. K., but Druid saved the day by winning the closing race at profitable odds, the result being never in doubt. Present prospects indicate that the largest New York contingent which ever left for Saratoga will be on its way after the close of this ineetiug. Two hundred and fifty bookmakers put their names down today for the first "cut In." The betting ring at the Spa will not accommodate more than half that number of layers. .August Belmont Jr. was inpured by a fall while playing polo at Saratoga yesterday. Yesterdays tremendous cloudburst of nearly two hours duration was confined solely to the two Beaches Manhattan and Brighton. A half mile away the ocean lioiilevard was thick with dust. Breckenridge Castle.man, president of the new Douglas Park track at Louisville, was at Brighton today. William Murray has been re-engaged as starter for the weeks racing at Hamilton, Ont., which commences on September 25. Jockey L. Smith has leen set down for the remainder of the meeting by starter Dade. It was rumored that the running of the two-year-old George S. Davis-in yesterdays Sunshine Stakes is receiving official attention. The Sombrero colts extremely had race was, it is alleged, anticipated in the stewards stand.
