FORTY-SEVEN MILES BETTER THAN 1:40. During the first seven months of this year, forty-seven races at- one mile were won In better than 1:40. Thirteen of these races were run at Belmont Park, six at Sheepshead Bay, six at Ascot Park, six at Latonia, three at Rockingham Park, three at Fort Erie, three at Aqueduct, two at Brighton Beach, two at Toronto, one at Windsor, one at Oakland and one at Oaklawn. Broadcloth, Rebo, Alma Dufour and Hamburg Belle each have two of these fast miles to their credit. The fastest mile of the year was 1:375, just one-fifth of a second slower .than the American record held jointly by Dick Welles and Kiamesha, made by Inquisitor when he won the Sheepshead Bay Handicap. This was probably the most exciting race of the year, for Inquisitor, Von Tromp, Halifax and Dishabille finished heads apart, with Dolly Spanker a half length back and the same distance in front of Bedouin. Incidentally this Is a new record for the Sheepshead Bay track. That race of Accountants for the Withers Stakes was a rattling good performance. He did the mile In 1:38J with 126 pounds up, .the highest weight carried by any of this years star milers. Perverse is the only other three-year-old that has carried more than 120 pounds and ruu a mile better than 1:40 this year. Bobble Kean, Hamburg Belle and Glorifler, the first named a five-year-old, and the last two four-year-olds, are the only others that have turned the trick with a burden of 120 pounds or more.
