A GREATLY IMPROVED RACEHORSE. Angler was not much of a racer last year. He managed to scramble Into the first three on several occasions, but the best he could show for his seasons work was a solitary winning race, and that a race for maidens at Brighton Beach, July 5, in. which he beat Chrysolite, Ismalllan and some other lowly non-winners at a mile and a sixteenth, run in 1:48. However, that was last year and Angler has mended his manners and now runs as a brother of Macy should. He has shown himself to be a fast horse and a real stayer, but he has not as yet been asked to carry high weights, so until he has 6hown that he can meet that test satisfactorily he cannot be rightfully called a high class racer, but at any rate he is more than useful and a credit to his dead sire, famous old Hindoo. This year he ran his first three races as the property of W. Clay. His last eleven have been in the ownership of J. D. Odom. For Mr. Clay he captured one race. This was on the occasion of his first start in 190G. It was in a five and a half furlongs dash, at the Lexington spring meeting, in which he defeated Dr. Wang, Charlie Eastman, Aurocelver, Robin Hood and Anne Stone in l:07g. Then he was taken east and at Brooklyn ran third to Grenada and Consuelo, at a mile and a sixteenth, and second to Benevolent at the same distance, then became the property of Mr. Odom. His first four races for the latter were failures although he twice finished third. Then he blossomed into good form, began to win and, but for a hopeless start In one race, would have been returned the winner of seven races in a row. As it was he took six of the seven. His first win for his new owner was at Sheepshead Bay, June 27, in a dash of a mile and a half over the grass course, ne was a 15 to 1 outsider, carried 100 pounds and won cantering by four lengths in 2:33i, with Glenecho, 108; Huntington, 10G; Lancastrian, 95; Leila, 99; Yorkshire Lad, 10G; Jennie McCabe, 101; Purity, 101, and Snow King. 108, strung out behind him in the order named. Next he ran unplaced, July 3, in a mile and a sixteenth race won by John Lyle, because he was nearly left at the post and had no chance from the outset. Since then his career has been one of unbroken and easily achieved success and from a selling plater he has advanced to the handicap division. The first of his line of five straight victories was at Sheepshead Bay, July 9, when he won at a mile and three-quarters in 3:04 by four lengths, with Leila second, Huntington third and Lancastrian, Woodsman and Priority unplaced. He carried 107 pounds. At Brighton Beach, July 12, he won at a mile and an eighth in 1:52, with 10G pounds up, defeating Lancastrian, 99; Red Friar, 107, and eight others. It was in every way an excellent performance. At the same track and with the same weight, July 20, he ran a mile and a quarter in 2:05 and won in a canter from Tyron, Embarrassment and six more. The foregoing were all selling faces, but he next came out, July 25, in a handicap at a mile and an eighth and, with 107 pounds, easily defeated Outcome, 112; Corrigan, 90; Tartan, 100; Ceder-strome, 105, and Agile, 114, in 1:53. -His last start was In a handicap at a mile and a quarter In which, with 112 pounds in the saddle, he cantered home in front of Corrigan, 94; Coy Maid, 110; Sailor Boy, 90; Agile, 109, and Lord Badge, 89, covering the distance In 2:05e. It Is to be regretted that this really good horse has no stake engagements at Saratoga, but he will no doubt be seen in action there In the overnight handicaps and condition races and a hard horse to beat.
