WHY DESERT CHIEF IS UNRELIABLE. Algernon Claxon, trainer of the stable of Grant Hugh Browne, attributes the unreliability of Desert Chief in the field to the fall he got at Belmont Park in the Whitney Memorial. That fall, Mr. Chixon says, seemed to break Desert Chiefs heart. It almost broke his neck. He landed on his head when he went down and strained the muscles of his neck so badly he could not get his muzzle to the ground for about a fortnight.
