i 1 RICHARD CARMAN TO MAINTAIN A STABLE. Richard F. Carman, prominent as an exhibitor in the horse shows at Madison Square Garden and one of the most noted whips and Xour-in-hand drivers in the country, is the latest recruit to racing. He was a purchaser at the sale at Sheepshead Bay Saturday and announced his Intention of collecting a stable of from eight to ten horses and later, enlarging it. He was the runner-up in the bidding on several of the best horses from the stables of John A. Drake and Newton Bennington,- but his principal purchase was Merrill, a handsome two-year-old bay . gelding, which is still a maiden, but which has shown promising form and speed. Mr. Carman paid 1,000 for Merrill, and as he is said to be ready to race, he will probably start her in the near future. Jnmes Blute- will train the new stable. "Im going into It modestly at first," said Mr. Carman. "I will get a stable of about eight good platers and want to race them in the contests for galloways that are so frequently given. I will continue to exhibit in the horse shows, but my wife and my son will have charge of most of this." The entry of Mr. Carman into racing is another evidence of the beneficial effects of the amateur race meetings, which have recently become, so popular in the east. At these meetings often a man who has been unfamiliar with racing gets a taste of the sport, so to speak, and from this his desire to become a participant in the real thing grows until he concludes to buy a stable of thoroughbreds.
