PONIES ARE MATCHED FOR 1,000 A SIDE. Orton Dobbie and Maud Magnum to Run a Half Mile Miller and Radtke to Ride, Discussion as to the merits, of racing ponies in general and of the well known Orton Dobbie in particular, between well known amateur lovers of the horse, has led to a match which is arousing much more than the usual amount of interest in the east. "Orton Dobbie, one of the ponies to be raced in the match, is owned by Mr. Elliott 0. Cowdln, of Mount Kisco, N. Y., who once owned the famous Requital," says the New York Herald. "Mr. Cowdin has a neighbor, Mr. Frank C. Bishop, who recently imported from France the stallion Adam, son of Flying Fox, at a cost of 80,000. "Mr. Bishop is one of three turfmen who race in the name of the Newcastle Stable, Messrs. Andrew Miller and Blair Painter being the other two. This confederacy has been very fortunate on the turf this year, Walter Miller, the Jockey whose- great skill has been the talk of the turf, being the rider for the stable. Many thousands of dollars have been won by the Newcastle Stable, not only in stakes, but in wagers. Mr. S. Osgood Pell, a Wall street broker, is the other party to the match. He owns the pony Maud Magnum, which, prior to the banter which led to the match, was turned out on a farm. She has been placed in the hands of Bobbie Smith, a well known professional trainer, to fit her for the match. By special permission of R. A. Rainey, one of the contract employers of Radtke, the jockey, he will have the mount on Maud Magnum. "Miller will ride Orton Dobbie, which is usually trained by Air. Cowdin, an amateur of skill. Just before the day of the race she will be placed in the hands of John Hynes. Thus the two crack jockeys of the season, about whom has centred more gossip than about any oilier two during the year, will meet again in rivalry. J3JeJraonfc Park, -isVtlKplace and. the-;last. day- of fall meeting at that" great race- course is the I time selected for the match. That day will be Saturday, October 20. The principals to the match have put up 1,000 a side, and. it is said that a side bet -of 5,000 has been made between the owners of the Newcastle Stable on the one side, and Mr. Pell on the other. "That the sum mentioned will not be even a small percentage of the amounts which will be wagered between this date and the date set for the match is shown by the elaborate preparations made by both parties to win and thus vindicate their judgment. "Maud Magnum was formerly owned, by Mr. W. Gould Brokaw. She is fast, but there is no record of her performances in the guide. Her opponent, Orton Dobbie, has won three races this year of record, one at a half mile at Belmont Park, on June -5, run in forty-nine seconds, and two others at Cedarhurst, L. I., on April 2S, one at a quarter of a mile, the other at a half mile. Orton Dobbie is by Kingstock brother to Janies R. Keenes Kingston. The match, which is expected to attract a very large attendance of the friends of both parties to it, will lie at a half mile. The start will be all important aud may be made without the barrier."
