1 1 ] I I , * t " 1 s V .- TO TRY AGAIN FOR DERBY AND OAKS, M. Edmund Blanc Has Two Promising Colts and a Filly to Send to Enqland. From France comes the Information that M. Edmund Blanc, the great racing man and rival of W. K. VanderbiU. is preparing for anotner vigor- ous attack on the Knglish Derby and Oaks of this year. It is said he has two slashing colts in Ouadi Haifa and Myram, a bay colt by Flying Fox. out of Airs and Graces. Ouadi Haifa is a brown colt, by Persimmon, out of Yesterllng, a mare by Sterling, out of Vessel, by Blenkhoolie, out of Vlie. by Zuyder Zee, out of Queen of Beauty, by Melbourne. This son of Persimmon Is spoken of as being an animal of great power and promise. He ran four times last year and showed erratic form. On Septeml er 1. at liantilly, he was beaten half a length by Pernod, a smart colt by Patron. About two weeks later in the Prix de Bard, at Maisons-Laffittc. Ouadi Haifa showed a splendid turn of speed and won easily from a high-class field, the distance being five and a half furlongs. On September 23. at Longchamps. the crack was pulled out again and he did not disappoint the impression he had already created In the minds of the critics, for he beat a field of twenty-three opponents by-four lengths. Then, somehow or other. Ouadi Haifa went off color, for on the same course on October 6, he could only make third to Calomel and La Sergue-use. Critics who saw the race say that the Blanc colt was interfered with early in the race and lost ground which he never could quite make up. There were twenty-three starters and Ouadi Haifa was the favorite. Myram. as far as breeding is concerned, is all that could lie desired. He is by the Derby winner, Flying Fox, and it will be remembered that Airs aud Graces, his dam. won the Oaks in 1898. Myram ran ouly once last year and in that contest showed that he was a smasher. This contest was the Prix du Tutunel at the St. Cloud meeting in 0ctul er. The distance was six and a half furlongs, but r Myram drew out at the finish aud won in the elever- est fashion. Blanc has an Oaks candidate, too, in Zahra. and d she is regarded as lieing a first rater. She is by y Flying Fox. out of Bass, a mare by Saraband, out of Bus.1xmIv. winner of the Oaks in 1884. Zahra a won the Prix de Tabionville. five and a half furlongs, ■- at Longchamps. there being a field of twenty. On October 1 she was only third to Mordant and d Hiht for the Prix de la March* at St. Cloud. Thus it will be seen that Blancs two Derby can-1 didates ami his Oaks filly are practically English-n bred, the only thing French about them being their r French birth. Nevertheless, all the credit goes to o Frame should the big English classics cross the Channel. t s a s . . I ,
