As a four-year-old Hastings ranked with the best horses of his time and was handicapped to be as good as Clifford aud Ben Brush — and was. He was sprinter of extreme speed, yet could stay a long route as well as any horse of his time. He won frequently in the l est of company and was seldom unplaced. He aud Clifford had a tremendous set-to in the Kearney Handicap at Saratoga and when the affair ended in a dead heat the horses were applauded when the owners divided the stakes.
