Lens Wins for Pat Dunne — Grosqrain Rewards Riddles Perseverance — Merry Belle the Surprise of the Day. New Orleans, La., January 15. — In winning the handicap, which was fourth on the card at City Park afternoon. Minnie Adams ran the fastest mile this year. Her time, 1:38 j. reduces by two fifths a second the track record which was set by Juggler last Friday. The performance was most astounding. In her previous race the fiily showed little speed and finished a bad last. On such a showing it was not expected that she would run away from Alma Dufour and Peter Sterling as she did today. She was neglected In the betting and owner Cook and trainer Phillips say they did not consider her chances good enough to justify an effort to recover what was lost on her the last time out. The victories of Lens. Grosgrain and Busk proved profitable to speculators. Lens was especially well supported. He had little trouble in wearing down Penrhyn in the final sixteenth and won well in hand. Busk had his work cut out for hiin to shake off the to 1 shot Butlnskie, but did so after going a half mile at a record-breaking clip. Butinskie held on long enough to land second place from the heavily supported Miss Leeds. Beticent showed a meritorious performance by winning the closing race, for which Consideration was favorite, in decisive style. Gwldway, which finished second, might have won, but he was in a Jam soon after the start and was knocked back to last place. Merry Belle, at 25 to 1, proved the surprise of the afternoon by beating out Delmore in the fifth. For eight months of perseverance on the part of H. C. Biddle, Grosgrain brought him a purse. Agra made a runaway affair of the opening race, in which the easterners were down to a man on Lucy MOTOR Among todays arrivals were David Gideon and Bob Lloyd, the well known eastern bookmaker. Both will remain here for some time. . C. Westfall has been appointed paddock judge at Oakiawn Park. J. C. Milam has sold Malaie to parties who will race him at the Suburban track. Burlew and ONeill will have a weeding-out sale in the near future. James McLaughlin will also dis- pose of most of the horses he has in training here.
