PETER PAN WINS THE TIDAL. SON OF COMMANDO PILES UP THE EARNINGS FOR JAMES R. KEENE. Cohort Comes Out as an Added Starter and Triumphs In Foam Stakes Hylas Success In the Beacon. " 3 New York, June 22. James It: Keene is reported to have said before the racing season began that he expected Peter Pan to be as good a three-year-old as was Sysonby. Few of those who heard of the remark were disposed to agree with Mr. Keene. lint it begins to look as if the vice-chairman oC the Jockey Club was not far wrong in the estimate he placed on the sou of Commando and Cinderella. Peter Pan won the rich TJidal Stakes at Sheeps-head Bay this afternoon with consummate ease. Whether lie is as good a horse as Sysonby whatever he may accomplish later on in the season wilt always he a matter of personal opinion, hut at any rate he seems destined to serve Mr. Keene as well in his three-year-old year as did Sysonby, which made a clean sweep of every race in which he started, with the exception of the Metropolitan Handicap, when he ran a dead heat with Kace King. Peter Pan hardly made so good a start as Sysonby, for Frank Gill beat hiin in the Withers and Dinna Ken took his measure in the Carlton Stakes. The defeat oC Peter Pan in these two races must be attributed to lack of condition, as, being a big, gross colt, it was almost impossible that he could be wound up to his best form under the wretched weather conditions for training that prevailed previous to the running of these two events. Now that Peter Pan is thoroughly at himself, he seems to be almost as much the superior of the other horses of his age as Sysonby did two year ago. Montgomery and Salvidere are about the oiily three-year-olds witli any pretensions to being high class except the stable companions of Peter Pan that Mr. Keenes colt has not met and defeated. Salvidere is, of course, an unknown quantity, but as good a colt as Montgomery ,is, few would be willing to concede him a good chance of beating Peter Pan over a long distance of ground with their weight up. Peter Pan already has earned 5,200 this season. By his victory in the Tidal Stakes, which netted his owner 5,050, he brings the stable earning of Mr. Keene for the season up to ,0S1. His success today also gives Ms sire, Commando, a big lead in the standing of the sires of 1007 winners with considerably in excess of 00,000 to his credit. The prediction made early in the season that it looked like another Keene year is being verified, ami it is not improbable that Mr. Keenes winnings for the season will go far beyond the 00,000 mark. The victory of Peter Pan was not the only feature of todays racing at Sheepshead Bay. It is, in fact, far from improbable that three champions ini their respective divisions won stakes at the Coney Island Jockey Clubs course this afternoon. The Foam, for two-year-olds, was won by Cohort, an added starter; while the Beacon Steeplechase went to Hylas. Cohort picked up 120 pounds" in the Foam and won with such consummate ease from horses oC fair class as to stamp him a youngster of tho highest order. His victory gave emphasis to tho belief that he should have beaten Notasulga for thor Daisy Stakes yesterday. Notasulga, good filly though: she is, had no license to beat Cohort in a truly; run race, and that the Oneck Stable colt is one of the very best youngsters of the year is aa accepted fact. In fact, Colin seems now to bo the only one that might tie rated above him, aud so far Cohort has the Indian sign on Colin, having wort about 1,000, while Colin s winnings are less than 0,000. Each colt has won two stakes and tlieic their meeting in the Great Trial next Saturday, when each will have to take up 120 pounds, will be awaited with much interest. The Great Trial fand at six furlongs, but Cohort raced in the Foam aa though the extra furlong would bother him but little. Hylas was never better than at present and his race in the Beacon -was the Jiest of his. career. That he will be the star of the steeplechase division this season is prophesied by many, for Hylas gave weight to his opponents today and won very impressively. Nat Hay, his rider, has always claimed that Hylas was about the best horse he ever rode, except for his disposition to sulk at times, and has always maintained that Hylas at his best could defeat Good and Plenty when the latter was at the top of hl3 form. Ideal conditions prevailed for the racing today. A first class card was offered, and the attendance must have been fully 25,000 persons. Although tho weather was stiOing hot in the city, it was delightfully cool and pleasant at the Bay, and in spite of the fact that favorites generally were overthrown, the sport was pleasing. Itosebens defeat in the opening race was attributed by many to the flat-footed system of starting, while the same reason apparently had mucli to do with the defeat of Colonel White, the odds-on favorite for the fifth race. Peter Pan and Saracinesca were the winning favorites, though for the Foam Stakes Sepoy had but a slight call over Cohort, tho winner. Colonel White, which was entered to be sold for 00 and was heavily backed by his owner, as well as by the general public, after getting away, poorly was pocketed when entering .the backstretch. and although able to run fast throughout, was so hampered all the way that he could never extend himself. Naturally he was the target for claiming purposes and two bids were put in for him. The bidders were William Huston and F. It. Doctor, and in the shake for possession Huston won. Colonel White cost Mr. Huston only ,nso. At this price he is a very cheap horse as there are few selling platers around now capable of beating liini. He was claimed out or a selling race by C. E. Darnell at Gravesend for ,100. Jockey Swain was suspended by starter Cassldy, for six days.
