JAMES P. DAWES DIES AT LACHINE. James P. Dawes, for many years a noted owner of steeplechase horses and a successful business man in Montreal, died at Lachlne, Quebec, last Thursday. Ill health caused his retirement from the turf some five years ago. While he was regarded as a superior judge of steeplechase horses and devoted most of his attention to the jumpers, he raced many horses on the flat and had his share of success. His most noted Jumper was Charlemagne, which during the period from 18S0 to 1SSG met and defeated the best horses in, the United States and Canada.
