CHAPULTEPEC VICTORIOUS, DE MUNDS HALF BROTHER EASILY WINS THE NEPTUNE STAKES. Far West Takes the Islip Handicap Kernel a Surprise in the Curragh Steeplechase Good Sport at Brighton. New York, July. "0. The card at Brighton Beach today was one of tlic best of the meeting. It contained three stake features the .,500 Neptune Stakes for two-year-olds; the Islip Handicap for older horses and the Curragh Stakes for steeplechasers. In addition there were as many attractive over-night events, in one of which the mighty Hose-hen was called upon to carry the tremendous weight of 150 pounds. A heavy rain during the forenoon Hooded the track and as it did not cease until after 1 oclock many persons remained away from the course. The attendance, however, exceeded 15,000, and those who were speculatively inclined had a profitable and pleasant days outing, as four extensively backed favorites won and -favorable atmospheric conditions prevailed for the remainder of the afternoon. The Neptune Stakes, which was the principal feature on the program, received two important additions in Smoker and Magazine, which fully equalized the loss of the conspicuous absentee, Monopolist. Chapultepcc, carrying top weight of 122 pounds, achieved a wonderful victory in this race. It was one of the most startling exhibitions of speed seen in the east this season. The half-brother to Ie Mund was heavily hacked. lie was so much the best that K. Dugan was not able to pull him hack to within hailing distance of the others. The struggle for second place was a hot one, however, between Smoker, Sir ClegeS" and"" Rslyinotid; it being ny-. ones place until the very end, when the Hitchcock colt drew out under Kadtkes vigorous finish. A plunge of large proportions materialized for Far West and he closed at 7 to 5. .Martin Doyle was favored by John W. Gates and that accounts for the lengthened odds against Cairngorm, Cabo-chon, Dolly Spanker and Coy Maid. The race was a spectaeular one. The favorite set a tremendous pace from the start, closely attended by Cabochon, Coy Maid and Martin Doyle. At the half the Keene representatives drew out suddenly and showed the way for a sixteenth, then as suddenly retired, leaving Far West with a comfortable lead, which was eventually decreased in the stretch by the fast coming Cairngorm, which just failed to get up in an exciting finish. W. Knapp, rider of the runner-up, claimed that his horse was rouoii by the winner, which had actually taken a diagonal course home, but as the Iaget horse had himself displayed the same tendency to bore out and was not impelled in any way, the stewards did not alter the. original placing. The condition of the course was such that the element of danger overshadowed every other consideration. Jimmy Lane bled and fell after he hail established a seemingly winning lead. Sheriff Williams then took command with every prospect of ultimate success, but he, too, blundered and the steadily rated Kernel came on and made good finally. Ihantom, the favorite, could not or would not run on the slippery field and was pulled up at the end of a mile. The tabled history of the Curragh Steeplechase is given below: Year. Winner. A. Wt. Lally, an extreme outsider, backed from -10 to P.O to 1, easily took Von Tromp, the receding favorite in the last race, Into camp. Orphan Lad was claimed out of this race by J. D. Logan for ,SG0. Jihn Huggins has completed arrangements for the immediate shipment to Saratoga of the numerous racers in his charge. J. K.
