P FIGURES ILLUSTRATING THAT A WINNING RACE, HORSand4 IS AN EXCELLENT BUSINESS PROPOSITION. A winning race horse is an excellent business proposition. There is nothing like equality in the earning capacity of the runner and trotter. Snch "money takers as Accountant was in 1900 and Peter Pan is this year, win four or live times as much as the chief winning trotter of any year. To own such a leviathan among racers would mean a fortune, to the average man. But aside from the Sysonbys, Delhis, Beldames, Accountants and Peter Pans, there are many other i racers that earn for their owners a lesser number or thousands, yet many thousands and continue their lucrative returns for a sufficient number of years to render any person of reasonably economical habits comfortably rich. Some. of these are of stake class, but many of-the so-called selling platers earn surprising aggregates. C. C. Smithsons mare Azelina, for instance, in an industrious career, lias won thirty-three races in a total of 127, nearly all purses of moderate value and lias returned the considerable sum of 2,005 to her owners in the course of. four years. Tlfousauds of men with considerable capital Invested in this, that or the other line of business would deem themselves fortunate it able to net such a return from their investments. This little mare furnishes but one o a host of similar instances. Two specimens taken from a higher class horses that figure respectably in handicaps Oxford and Dishabille, show1 returns for thec same number of years of 9,405 and 2,515. respectively. Considering that a public trainer will feed, train and race a horse for from to per day, it can be seen that the net annual return in. such cases is very great. The table appended in Illustration Is of horses selected at random that have campaigned for the last Tour years and are still in active service and likely to add considerably to their total earnings before retiring from the arduous service of the track. They are but a small section from the class of horses they represent. Last year 177 racers won 5,000 or more, the majority of which would show well in this table. But consideration of what is herd displayed will serve to emphasize the statement that ownership of a winning race horse is decidedly a good possession. There are only four among these horses that cost as much as ,000 as yearlings. Glorifier was sold to L. V. Bell for ,200. Pat Dunne paid ,250 for Envoy. Dr. Leggo was knocked down trt C. Ci McCalterty for ,200 and M. I. .Miller paid ;000 for Gold Enamel. Lady Ellison, Minnie Adams and Raibert were sold privately. Dishabille, Dr. Gardner, Charlie Eastman; Preen, Handzarra and John Carroll were raced first by the men who bred them. The prices of others were: Airship, 00; Cutter, 50; Logistilla, 25; Red Leaf, 00; Fire-hall, 00; Oxford, 00; Royal. Legend, 75; Silver-skin, 00 and Matador, 50.
