ONLY A CANTER FOR NEALON SON OF SAIN WINS TWIN CITY HANDICAP in Vast time. Lawrence P. Daley, an Added Starter, Wins Autumn Maiden Stakes Sanguine Is Disqualified Farcical Steeplechase. New York, September 2. The rainstorm this morning had no apparent effect on the attendance at Shcepshead I.ay this afternoon. There were at least 40,000 persons at the course. The card, with the rich Twin City Handicap as the stellar attraction and the Autumn Maiden Stakes as a secondary feature, was attraeive enough to cause the celebrants of the great labor holiday to risk a drenching to see the sport. While the going was sloppy, there was an underlying firmness that permitted fast time, as was evidenced in the two stake races. The Twin City Handicap had only two withdrawals, Superman and Borgbesi. Of the nine that went to the post Salviderc was the public choice, but after the barrier was released there was never any question about the winner. Nealon quickly established a safe lead, held It all the way and was never fully extended. He displayed his magnificent Suburban form and won by a margin of eight lengths from Dandelion, with Beacon Light third and Salviderc fourth. Salvidere was shuffled back about midway of the journey of a mile and a quarter, and at the end appeared as if he was short. The time of the race was 2:053, only one, second slower than the track record. William Dubois, the owner of Nealon, is said to have hacked the son of Sain heavily. The public, however, did not believe that he could concede so much weight tcrthe others and win"". The Autumn Maiden Stakes, for two-year-olds, at live-eighths of a mile, had a most unsatisfactory result. Fancy, Dennis Stafford, St. Ilarlo, Aimeo C. Countermand and Celt, six of the fifteen carded Saturday, were withdrawn, and Lawrence 1. Daley, Jim Gaflney, Alfred Noble, Kestigouche and Smiley Corbett were added. This caused much confusion among those who were speculatively inclined. They finally settled on Jim Gaffney as their favorite, backing him from 2 to 1 to 7 to 0. Lawrence I. Daley, backed only by the few present who saw him leave the ranks of the maidens at Saratoga last Thursday, displayed a decided fancy for the soft going, ran close up in the early stages, gradually wore down Jim GafTney, which had set a tremendous pace through the persistent oncoming of Desirous, and won by a head at the lucrative odds of 30 to 1. Alfred Noble and Rcstlgouche, two more of the added starters, finished fourth and -fifth respectively. There was loud complaint against the ndded starter evil. The steeplechase was a farce. Oliver Cromwell and Coal Black Lady were withdrawn, leaving only laprika. Judge White and Homoselle to start. Paprika was the favorite at odds-on, but it was noticeable that he was not accorded the support that he was seemingly entitled to, while there was a rush a few minutes before post time to back Homoselle and her odds were rapidly cut from 15 to 5 to 1. Homoselle led under sufferance and by a wide margin for the first mile and a half. Then she began to tire and Paprika and Judge White began moving up rapidly. At the second to the last jump both of these horses fell and Homoselle cantered home. Judge White was remounted by Dupee and finished second. Paprika could have won the race as easily as breaking sticks had he not fallen. It may have been that the slippery condition of the field had much to do with his poor fencing, but there were many who questioned the integrity of the running. Sanguine, the favorite in the last race, led all the way and finished first, but was disqualified for fouling and the race was given to Wave Crest, second money to King Folly and third to Martha Jane. Sanguine swerved all over the course iu the last quarter of a mile. Keator and Lancastrian, favorites for the first and fourth races, wou, the former after a drive and the latter easily. Jockey Hadtkos absence from the saddle today was due to a suspension of three days for disobedience at the post Saturday. Old timers say that the steeplechase was the poorest affair of its kind ever decided at Sheeps-head 1 Day. Salvidere appeared the picture of health and was much admired in the paddock. In going that he does not like. Dandelions performance was decidedly meritorious.
