San Francisco. Cal.. November 11. Fitz Herbert, a two-year-old owned jointly bv S. C. Hildreth and John B. Madden, carried scale weight and won the Oakland Handicap, wortii .5-10 net. from eleveii oe the best horses lit training at the Emeryville course today. With tin-solitary exception of Jack Nuiinally every starter in the race -was in receipt of big weight concessions from the victor, which, as one of the Hildreth and others entry, which included Smiley Corbett and Tony Faust, virtually dominated the running from start to finish. Fitz Herlwrt. which cost his owners exactly 0. 000. was one of the star two-year-olds of the first half of the metropolitan season of racing. The winning of the Oakland Handicap marks John E. Maddens first success on the California turf. Hildreth asked the stewards during the morning for permission to ride Shilling on the colt, saying that he would have to scratch him otherwise, as lie stood no chance with diminutive Lptou iu the saddle. The result, however, proved otherwise, but Fitz Herbert ran unbacked so far as the owner was concerned.- Woodcraft, at 1 to 5, was the second successful starter from the Hildreth barn and carried a stable commission representing the exact amount of Its afternoon stake- earning.
