VICTORIA DERBY WON BY ALAWA. The Victoria Derby was decided over the famous Flemingtoh race course at Melbourne. Australia. October 31. before the usual great concourse of people, rind was won by Mr. jr. Gordons bay or brown colt, Alawa Mr. C. Jefferles bay colt. Parsee. running" second, and Mr. .T. Mayos bay colt. Lord Nolan, third. Trafalgar. Wa-ila. The Brewer. Demo-1 litlon, Monobel and Mother Goose ran unplaced. Alawa was at 2 to 1 in the betting and. running the mile and a half in 2:35. finished easing up two and a half lengths in front of Parsee. the latter being the winner of the Australian Derby about a month previously. The Victoria Derby is a sweepstakes of 25 each, with 0,000 added. Alawa was bred by J. and W. Thompson at Widden. New South Wales, and sold as a yearling for ,900. Last year he started in seven races, of which he won the last two, a nursery sweepstakes of ,300. at three-quarters, and the Select Stakes, of ,000. at seven-eighths, over the Flemlngton track.
