QUITE CHEERING NEWS FOR HORSEMEN. Newly-Formed Association Gives 0,000 to Each New York Racing Body for Stakes. New York. April 16. — The gathering of prominent owners and breeders at the headquarters of the Jockey Club in the Windsor Arcade Wednesday and the formation of the Breeders and Owners Association was a step of the highest importance in the way of promoting and fostering racing in this state under its enforced new conditions. There we.e in -out .lames B. Haggin. F. C. Bishop. O. M. Bishop. H. B. Duryea. Frederick Johnson. Andrew Miller. H. T. Oxnard and H. K. Knapp. James B. Haggin was elected temporary chairman. He announced that a guarantee fund had been raised among the owners ami breeders to an amount in excess of 00,000. to be used by the various racing associations for the purpose of offering stakes for the coming season. As was aunonnced some time ago. a very consid erable sum has been contributed as a fond for stakes to he offered at the various meetings of the year, and this meeting was for the purpose of formulating plans for the proper distribution of the money. The association formed Wednesday Is composed purely of owners and breeders and it was from them that the subscriptions were received. As a result, at each race meeting given in New York over the circuit of the Jockey Club this season ten stakes will be offered in addition to the various features provided for and such other stakes as the associations themselves may offer. These stakes will be one of an added value of ,000. four with ,500 added to each and five that will have tl.QOQ in added money. By this division exactly 00,000 is taken up In an equal division among the five associations — Westchester Racing Association. Brooklyn Jockev Club. Coney Island Jockey Club. Saratoga Racing Association and the Empire City Racing Association. The money set apart for each meeting amounts to 0. NO. bringing the total to 00,000. This very material increase to the prize nion-w of the year has nothing whatever to do with the stakes already closed or decided upon by the association-;, and it means just the addition of 0,000 to each association to be used for stake purposes. The fund from which the 0,000 per track has kcea set aside has not been closed by any means. and while its present amount has not been given out it is announced that it is considerably in excess of that which has been set aside. Conditions for these stakes will he framed by a ci mmittee composed of Andrew Miller and Clarence Mackay. who will confer with each association on the subject. The ,000 race will undoubtedly be a big handicap, while the various other stakes will be made up along lines for the best interests of the horsemen. In the matter of the Westchester Racing Association the stake list as assisted bv the fund was approved. This list of stakes is of a variety and richness to bring cheer to horsemen as an eloquent guarantee ot good racing for desirable values in the future.
