ARONDACK IS CUP WINNER FILLY TAKES HANDSOME AND VALUABLE TROPHY AT BLUE BONNETS. Well Backed and Finds It Easy to Lead Hanbridge to Finish. — Layers at Montreal Continue to Meet with Heavy Losses. Montreal. One.. June 15. — The Inaugural running Of the Windsor Hotel Cap Handicap attracted a large gathering to Blue Bonnets this afternoon. A small but select field contested the race and Mrs. James McLaughlin furnished Ihe winner in the three year-old lily. Arondack. which won easily from the. favorite. Hanbridge. after leading from start to finish. That Arondacks victory was no surprise to her stable connections was demonstrated by the betting. She was played from 4 to 1 down to 5 to 2 and went to the post the best backed horse in the race. The cup. which is a massive affair, is probably the handsomest trophy ever offered in connection with a race in the Dominion. It was exhibited on the lawn in front of the clubhouse and was much admired. When Arondack cantered home an easy winner she was greeted by great applause and tiie outcome was seemingly popular. The steeplechase furnished the best contest of the afternoon, the finish bringing the vast throng in the grandstand to their feet to yell encouragement to Stone, the rider of Nat B. There were only three starters, with the Colt entry. Economy, a strong favorite. The hitter dashed to the front when the start came and, fencing iu admirable fashion, drew away into a long lead the first turn of the Held. Stone, on Nat B.. waited until after taking tl e tenth jump before making his move, but from there to the end he gradually ha proved his position aud in a sensational finish just managed to get up in time to beat Economy a head on the post. The low-fences here suit Nat B. He is a green horse at the game. Todays effort was his second through the field and he duplicated his previous showing Four favorites won and the layers again I 9| heavily. One of the big operators estimates the approximate losses of the ring here and at Toronto as close to half a million dollars. If a break docs not come in their favor, the ranks of the layers will lie decimated by midsummer. The hunteis flat race resulted in a hollow victory for Bath brick, which won off by himself after leading throughout. Jockey Mclntyre had the mount on two winners. Arondack and Pulka.
