FEREN0 MAKES NEW RECORD AT LATONIA. W. J. Youngs Filly Runs Fast Five Furlongs — Kings Daughter Works Impressively. Cincinnati. ., June 15. — Fairly good racing resulted From an ordinary program at I.atoaia this afternoon, but the speculators who follow horses at short odds fared none too well, as most of the choice- were beaten, the exceptions being Albert Star and Mellowinint. winners of the closing races. Ihe most pronounced upset came with the running ol tie- second race, in which Louise S. was decisively beaten by Fereno and King Solomon", which pair figured in a thrilling struggle for the honors. Fereno in winning, reduced the track rei-ord for live furlongs by one-fifth of a second, running the distance in UOO. The nurse race at a mile and a sixteenth was expected io bring about a stirring contest between John E. McMillan and Glidrhg Belle as a result of the weight adjustment. The Schulte fiily was in receipt of fifteen pounds actual weight from her prstwhlli conqueror. On the strength of her good showing in her last start, she was backed to take John E. McMillans measure, but failed to even seriously threaten the winner at any stage. John E. McMillan won handily from Bonnie Bard, with Gilding Belle driving hard to take third. After the race a retort circulated that the filly Is suffering from distemper. Big fields in the first and third races were responsible for much crowding, but no mishaps resulted aside from the interference that most of the contenders were subjected to. Placides escape from interference contributed to her victory in the opening dash. Etheldas early speed enabled her to obtain such a long lead in the third that she was able to hold Busy Man and Plume safe at the finish. The Albert Star coterie profited handsomely by his victory. He ran in decidedly improved form ami after being subjected to serious interference during the early rannlng. he picked his field up gradually in the stretch and won with plenty in reserve. Kereno scored a lucky victory over King Solomon in the second race. Hie latter got away in a tangle and Powers put up a slovenly ride, taking the coil wide in the stretch witli consequent loss of ground. Mellowmint was the i-asiest winner of tin- aftor-BOOa and took the closing race as his rider pleased. T. C. McDowells Kings Daughter was worked a mile and a quarter this morning with her Suburban Handicap weight up. She covered the distance in easy fashion in 2:05*. If she retains her present form Mr. McDowell is sanguine that she will be the winner. Jockey Warren has been forced to cancel all all riding engagements by order of his doctor. The hoy sustained an injury to one of his legs from a buckle on his saddle girths, but thinking it was only a bruise he neglect d it and is now in danger of blood poisoning. H. G. Bedwell will sJiip from here to New York at the close of the originally scheduled l.atoni i niii ting, ami will engage in the racing at Empire City. W. E. Applegate has shipped Gilpy to the farm to be turned out until fall. The colt will be gelded before he starts again. E. C. Hopper and Sanford 0, Lyne were among todays visitors. Mr. Hopper did not have anything to say regarding the prospects for racing in California next winter. Members of the New York. Philadelphia and Cincinnati National league baseball teams were visitors at the track today, this being an off day in the league. Managers McGraw and Murray, respectively of the New York and Philadelphia teams, landed on several of the winners.
