BALLOT MAKES DEBUT AT ASCOT HEATH. Kcene Crack Finishes Unplaced with 140 Founds Uo — Brilliant Opening of Notable Meeting. linden. Eng.. June 15. -Ascot Heath meeting, with its magnificent array of rich stakes, opened today tinder auspicious circumstances. The assemblage was the largest aud most brilliant in the history of the famous course. The elite of the social world were presenl in force. King Edward VII. and Queen Alexandra graced the opening day with their presence, going to the races in state. This procession consisted of twelve four-horse open carriages, with postilions and outriders, in uniform scarlet. This imposing spectacle wended its way to the royal enclosure, from which the days racing was witnessed. James R. Keenes Ballot made his 1909 debut in the Trial Stakes, in which he carried top weight of 140 pounds. He finished unplaced, but made a showing that is described as satisfactory. It is said that his effort of today was principally to tit him for the Ascot Gold Gup confest of Thursday. Harry Payne Whitneys American-bred Top o the Morning finished second in the historic A-seor Biennial Stakes. Mr. Whitneys Artless and Au gust I.elmouts Merry Task were among the nnid.ie ■ ! contestants in the Coventry Stakes.
