DECEPTIVE GOING PREVAILS AT LAT0NIA. Track Dries Out Wonderfully Under Influence of Hot Sun and Mud Runners Fail. Cincinnati. O.. June 29. — Race patrons were favored t iiis. afternoon hv some splendid sport, the finishes in each instance being of the spectacular sort. To the surprise of horsemen and speculators, the blazing sun dried the track to such an extent that what was expected to be at best a slow track, bordered on good at the outset and improved with the running of every race. As a consequence mad ratings proved delusive and upsets came witli exasperating frequency. Despite the defeat of five favorites, the fourteen lavers that went on this afternoon did not have a profitable day. as the smart set landed on nearly all the winners. Palaiuons connections profited extensively when he ame home in advance of Zienap by a slight margin. The Solmlt. filly showed a game perform Mice, but the heavy impost and the going militated against her. 1lie opening dash was reduced by scratches from an entry of fifteen to six starters. Halt Dereham purchased Gerrymander after his defeat iu the second race for the reported price of 9900. S. K. Hughes, acting for E. C. Hopper, owner of Calash, disposed of the colt to W. E. Applogate during the afternoon at private terms. The horses comprising the strings of W. II. Fizer and P. Dunne, twenty-six in all. will be .shipped to Fort Brie tomorrow. The horses of A. Baker and J. S. Hawkins will be transferred to llie same track Thursday. Jeff Bernstein, an eligible for the Canadian Derby, will be given his final trial for that event before shipment from here. The harass in charge of James Blute. owned bv W. Gerst. will lie shipped to the Kmpire City track Thursday. J. T. Irelands string will go at the same lime. James McLaughlin will truster his siring to Fort F.iie Thursday. He will receive an additional consignment to campaign on the Canadian courses from his father.
