r CONDENSED HISTORY OF THE CONEY ISLAND JOCKEY CLUB STAKES : Tlie Coney Island Jockey Club Slakes is the race established, by the Coney Island Jockey Club to take the place of the American Derby in American racing, after Mayor Carter II. Harrison had taken the measures that resulted in the abandonment of racing at Washington Park. Since it was first run in 1007 its history is necessarily of the brief order and it is to be contested for the third time this afternoon. In its first two years of running It was a guaranteed race of 5,000, with a further contingency of 0,000 if its winner also carried oil the Tidal Stakes and Lawrence Realization. This year it is only of the value of ,500 and the chance to win that extra 0,000 has gone glimmering. The idea at the bottom of the foundation of this race was distinctly creditable to tlie Coney Island Jockey Club and it will lie surprising if the race is not restored to something like its former dignity within the next year or two. The record of the event is as follows: Year. First. Jockeys. Wt. Second. Wt. Third. Wt Val. Time. W07 Frank Oill W.
