NOW IT IS FITZ HERBERT AND MASKETTE. New York, July 9. In some quarters there is a disposition not to concede Fitz Herberts claim to the three-year-old championship of the American turf until he beats James R. Keenes Maskette. admittedly the queen of the fillies. The winner of last years Futurity is a filly of uncommon prowess. Her race witli 12i pounds in the Mermaid was one of the most impressive performances of the season. She did not mind her big burden a bit and she reeled off her mile and an eighth like this: Eighth, 12J: quarter, 24; three-eighths. ::5;; half. 47; live-eighths. 59; three-quarters. 1:12s; mile, 1:385, and the mile and an eighth, 1:52. Maskette was in hand at the finish after stepping the briskest mile and an eighth ever shown in the Mermaid. Discriminating critics agree that her form so far is as high as was that of Beldame, the best three-year-old filly of 1904. And Beldame took Ort Wells, Stalwart and Delhi hito camp when she met them at Gravesend in September.
