SIMCOE BEATEN BY JOHN A. PLACED HORSE IN- CANADIAN DERBY LOSES TO RACER FROM "BUSHES." Centre Shot Takes Handicap, Feature of Fort Erie Card Veteran John .Carroll Repeats His Recent Victory Attendance Continues Large. . Buffalo. N. Y.. July 9. The Niagara Racing Association offered its patrons this afternoon a .well balanced program of seven races which brought out it large attendance at Fort Erie. Class was well represented and stirring contests resulted. Favorites held their own and the public enjoyed a pleasant and profitable afternoons outing. The crowds that are turning out at the hilltop track this season show an increase of about twenty per cent, over the attendance of last year and the meeting is certain to be -profitable for the association. In the feature race, a handicap at three-quarters, five speedy sprinters accepted the issue, with Centre Shot, although carrying top weight, the . most favored. She made good, but only after a sharp five furlongs struggle with Royal Onyx and Uncle Jimmle Gray. The Latonia aggregation showed loyalty to Al Muller and Marse Abe. but both ran disappointingly. The steeplechase, while spectacular for the first round of the course, proved a failure before It terminated, as three of the five starters came to grief. The mishaps began when Gait bolted at the first hedge. The unseating of Harringtons rider at tho ninth fence followed. Awawegang began tiring badly at this point and fell from exhaustion on reaching the thirteenth jump. He was remounted and took third money. Dr. Keith, the favorite, won from Bergoo. John A. and Simcoo furnished a rousing finish in the mile dash, the former winning through the superior handling that Howard gave him. Simcoe was best, but Reld blundered during the first three-quarters by holding him back under sharp restraint. Barney Schreiber furnished the beaten favorite in the opening dash in Banlves, which failed to land any portion of the purse. The colt was away poorly, while the winner, Galvesca, had the best of racing luck. John Carroll made good in the fifth race In old-time style, notwithstanding that he was subjected to much interference. The defeat of Carthago in the sixth was costly to the smart set, as they considered him one of the " best propositions of the afternoon. Green .Dale, the winner, was bid up 00 over an entered price of the same- amount by Guy Gray. His owner retained him witli the customary advance. Holscher probably terminated ills racing career when be let down badly in his fore legs during the running of the closing race; Zipango enabled the form players to retrieve some of their losses when he overhauled. Ceremonlus after a hard drive. Pat Dunne lias secured second call on the services of "apprentice jockey Reid. P. M. Civill has first call and P. T. Chinn has third call. Jockey Treubel was notified today that his application for a license to ride on the New York tracks had been granted by the Jockev Club. He will pilot most of the horses in the P. T. Chinn string that will Imj campaigned at Saratoga. Jockey Rettig. who fell with Howard Shean yesterday and was thought to be injured, was able to lie about this afternoon and will resume riding tomorrow. " Abe Garson has gone to Now York, where he will take over several of J. E. Maddens two-year-olds for racing on the Canadian circuit. There were additional arrivals from Latonia today.
