THE LONG ISLAND HANDICAP . q, The two stakes to lie run at Sheepshead Bay this afternoon were both introduced to the racing public of New York in 1804 and will consequently be run for the sixteentli time this afternoon. The Long Island has always been of minor importance when compared witli such races as the Suburban or Commonwealth, but has not been without its own attractions and has annually been fought out by good race horses. The three placed in its first running. Sir Walter, Roche and Don Alonzo, would have been accounted handicap !nne.s of high class in any year and In any company. Its next winner, Ramapo, had won the Suburban Handicap of the. year before. Its fourth winner, Clifford, was a grand race horse east and west, in fact, one of the best of American turf history. He ran third to Boundless and St. Leonards in the memorable SCiO.000 American Deri of 1893 and his failure to win was a stunning surprise to bis owners and backers, whose faitli in him was such that they deemed it almost impossible for him to fail. Other distinguished horse triunipant in the Long Island were Ogden, Bangle, Gold Heels, Major DalngOrfield, Proiier, Dishabille and Cottontown. The record of the race is: lear. First. Age. Jockeys.
