DOUBTFUL TACTICS USED BONNIE KATE WINS GRAND CANADIAN STEEPLECHASE AT FORT ERIE. Her Stablemate Bothers Waterway, the Favorite, During Running of Race Weber Stable and Jockey Davenport in the Limelight. I Buffalo, N. Y., July 24. Chilly and bleak weather put a dainper on the sport at Fort Erie today. r Heavy going caused numerous withdrawals and spoiled the good card, of which the Canadian Steeplechase over the full course, and a handicap at a mile and an eighth were the principal features. The steeplechase had a guaranteed value of ,200 and five accepted the issue. The race was marred by mishaps to three of the starters and resulted in the defeat of AVaterway. the favorite. Bonnie Kate, coupled witli The Poet as the Ferriss entry, leading him to the finish and gaining a doubtful victory. Bonnie Kate bad been the leader throughout and fenced in good style until approaching the twelfth jump, where she blundered slightly and allowed her stable companion to join her. They raced together over the next jump, but The- Poet was taken back and began herding AVaterway when he was about to go into the lead. The Poet made a had landing at the seventeenth jump and AVaterway started after Bonnie Kate, but In the stretch the latter pursued a zigzag course and forced AVaterway to shorten his stride. The Poet was remounted and finished within the time limit for third money. Harrington and Ksterjoy. both from the Cerst stable, came to grief early.
