WINNERS OF THE SARATOGA CUP As American racing goes, the Saratoga Cup is a very ancient fixture and It is now forty-four years since Kentucky defeated Captain Moore and Ithinodyne on the occasion of its first running. Kentucky was one of the best of the great band of magnificent horses sent to the races by Lexington and winner of the cup again in its second year. He was not the only dual winner, Springbok, Parole and General Monroe acquiring tins right to share in that distinction in subsequent years. Like others of the long-established Saratoga Stakes, the cup has no continuous history, having been thrice discontinued for a time, lmt it has always been revived and always highly popular. Perhaps the most memorable race in its history was that between Hairy Bassett and Longfellow in 1S72. They were the unquestioned champions of the east and the west and, in a tremendous race for the Monmouth Cup at Long Branch, Longfellow had defeated Harry Bassett a short time before and before a tremendous crowd. Partisanship ran high. New Yorkers did not believe in the Long Branch race and went to Saratoga in droves to get even. Westerners held Longfellow to be invincible and Hocked to Saratoga to add to their gatherings from Harry Bassetts devoted followers. This time it was the hitters turn. At the end of a grand display of all the qualities that go to make up the highest class racer, he was lirst by an open length. But when it was discovered that Longfellow had twisted one of his plates double and broken down in the race, few could assert confidently that he would not have won ngainliut for the accident that retired him from racing permanently.
