BARLEYTHORPE WORKING FAST. James Gaffneys Futurity Candidate Doing: Well Since His Return to Sheepshead Bay. New York. August 27. Barleythorpe. which will carry James E. Gaffneys colors in the rich Futurity next Monday, is showing some fast trials at Sheepshead Hay. Trainer Weir had the Woolsthorpe colt out early Thursday morning and breezed him three-quarters of a mile in better than 1:14. Weir is not saying much as to the colts chances in the big race, but it is known that he expects a brilliant showing by the youngster. Work-watchers at Saratoga consider Barleythorpe lias the stake at his mercy. Barleythorpe is a quick breaker at the barrier and has so much early speed that Weir thinks he will show in front of the field when the horses reach the bend in the chute. After that, in Weirs opinion, expressed to Mr. ;affney. it will be simply a question of stamina and gameness. and if the colt possesses these qualities, he will either win or be lighting it out with the colt or filly that lands the ! prize. James R. Keenes Sweep and Grasmere were also out at the Bay. Trainer Howe worked them together, but did not allow them to lie extended to the limit. Howe says his colts will be right on edge when they go to the post. Rocky Oltrien. winner of the Hopeful Stakes, is i also working better than ever before and is re-: garded as a factor. The Montpelier Stable will have a dangerous candidate in Candleberry. a colt by Ben Itrush Candle, which was just out of the money in the Hopeful and has since shown a series of fast trials. Trainer Ilealey is enthusiastic over this colts chances and is qnictly predicting that lie will be the winner with a fair amount of racing luck. Unless present plans are changed, the rest of the Futurity field will be made up of J. A. Rennets German Silver: J. L. MeGinuis Shannon: T. W-OBriens Perry Johnson; W. J. Youngs Mesmerizeri K. H. Bradleys Coliiiit: II. It. Brandts P.ig Stick, and possibly II. I. Whitneys Rumpus. The Futurity will be worth about .$::::,000 gross, of which the , winners share will be close to 7,000.
