STARTER DUKE MURDERED AT HENDERSON. Henderson, Ky., August 2S. William Ball, owner of several horses that were raced at the meeting which has been In progress in this city, shot and killed Ed Duke, the official starter, last night, lie fired four shots, all taking effect, the last three being pumped into Dukes body as it lay prostrate in the street. It is rumored that the cause of the murder was Dukes accusation that Ball was the cause of warrants being served upon the promoters of the racing here. Duke Is a native of Los Angeles. Cal., and has a wife in Denver. Duke died within five minutes after he was shot. Ball at once surrendered himself to the officers. Ball is the son of the late C. C. Ball, who was- formerly mayor of this city, and has for some years past been interested in racing. He is the owner of Sagapanak and cither horses, and was one of the horsemen that sued the racing association yesterday for a 1909.sh3 purse that he had won during the ill-starred meeting here. The meeting of the Albuquerque Fair and Racing Association came to a sudden close under these circumstances. William Rabb of Denver, Col., carried tins meeting through Wednesday, the fourth day, and paid the purses for that day, but declined to pay any back debts contracted under the manage-nient uf J. G-. Bussey, secretary aud general manager, who left Henderson Tuesday night. Rabb was apparently backing the meet, but says that he Is not , the Albuquerque Fair aud Racing Association. John O. Huhlein, manager of the band, then swore out warrants against Judge E. H. Canfield, racing secretary: Sidney Courtiu, secretary: J. G. Bussey and William Rabb. charging them with operating a race meetiiig without first obtaining license from tin; State Racing Commission, which is required by the Kentucky statutes. All were arrested except Bussey. They all gave bond Rabb put up a cash bond of ,000. Then suits began to be tiled in the circuit clerks office praying for attachments and garnishees in each case. "The Ohio Valley Bank and Trust Company, Henderson National Bank and the Union Bank aiul Trust Company were summoned to answer as garnishees, and the ,000 cash bond was attached in the hands of Sheriff Ed Melton in each of the suits filed. William Rabb was made a defendant in each suit, the charge. being that he was doing business in the name of the Albuquerque Fair and Racing Association. . The claims sued on thus far in the Circuit Court foot up 70, with a number of smaller claims in magistrates courts. On August 17 articles Incorporating the Albuquerque Fair and Racing Association were recorded in the county clerks office. The capital stock is 00 and the incorporators are J. G. Jussey; four shares of 0 each: E. K. Held or Henderson, three shares of 0 each;. Ben Letcher if Henderson, three shares of 0 each.
