1 , EQUALS AMERICAN RECORD GRANIA RUNS MILE AND SEVENTY YARDS IN 1:42 2-5 AT FORT ERIE. Feat Was Accomplished in Winning Handicap in Which Prince Ahmed and Zipango, Bedwell Entry, Made Disappointing Showing. j Buffalo. N. Y.. August 30. Fast and spirited racing was again tlie order at Fore Erie this afternoon. Some of the finishes furnished keen excitement, the winner remaining in doubt until the official placing was displayed. The cool weather which prevailed did not deter a big crowd from attending. The feature race, a handicap at a mile and seventy yards, went to Omnia, but to beat Palaiuou she had to equal the American record of 1:42 for the distance, made by Kings Daughter, carrying 124 pounds, August 25. 1908. Tlie disappointment of the race was the showing made by H. O. Bedwells pair. Prince Ahmed and Zipango. They were short-priced favorites and were looked upon as having the race at their mercy. Prince Ahmed flattered his backers during the first three-quarters by running in a forward position, but when everyone expected him to pass into the lead and draw away he tired perceptibly and All Red was able to beat him for third money. Class Leader scored an easy victory in the steeple-, chase over tlie short course. He was much the best, led by a wide margin for the entire trip and won cantering. J. C. Ferriss and his connections pulled off a brace of coups in the first two races, liolh for two-year-olds, with Countless and Delf. The former Is owned by John G. Greener, who recently sold Olam-bala. lie was backed from a high price of 15 to 1 to 5 to 1, and won commandingly. Delf showed much speed for a half mile, then appeared beaten by Inflection, but when the latter ran out in the stretch got up to win by a narrow margin. Tlie last three races resulted in nose finishes and aroused the enthusiasm of tlie spectators to a keen pitch. Ben Double overcame interference in the fifth and. after a rough trip, finished witli great courage to down St. Jeanne in the last stride. Al Muller threatened to make a runaway race of the sixth, but gradually faded away In the stretch and succumbed to Casque in the last stride. Cruche dOr and Golcouda had a spirited struggle In the sev- enth and the Seagram filly just managed to land the purse. H. G. Bedwell has disposed of Joe Rose and George W. Lebolt to J. W. Schorr. ----- Jockey J. Howard was fined 5 by the starter for disobedience at the post.
