RICH PRIZE GOES TO SWEEP j STURDY SON OF BEN BRUSH PINK DOMINO t WINS THE FUTURITY. n I li Candleherry Is Second and Winners Stablcmate. , i Grasmere, Third Outcome of Race Makes t J. R. Kccne Leading Eastern Owner. j 1 1 J J Now York. August HO. Sweep easily vanquished i twelve juvenile opponents in the Futurity Stakes at i Sheepshead liay today. Tlie Keene youngsters i t margin of victory over Candlobcrry, his nearest at- temlaut at the linish. was six lengths. Candleboj-ry j came fast in the closing furlong anil headed Grits- , mere. .lames R. Keenes other entry-, for the place. . There wen- thirteen starters, two being added at f the last moment, after three had been scratched. 1 Excepting Waldo, which was ineligible, the lower of the juvenile division of the present season was J represented. lint for the slight bend a quarter of a mile from the linish. the horses raced over a 1 straightaway course and, except for a jumble of colors Hashing in the sun and a perfect whirlwind of dust, the spectators in the grandstand and on the lawn could tell little of what was going ou in the race until the little brown colt singled out of the ruck and the shout went up "Sweep wins." The favored few with powerful held glasses had noti-U that Sweep had delayed the start by acting badly at the ost. kicking at everything and every- body in sight. The break found him in his stride heading obliquely across the track to the Inside. Many of his opponents suffered from crowding, in 1 eluding Rocky Ollrien and Iithario. Sweep piick- i lv dropKd in behind Barleythorpe and Grasmere the pacemakers, and when the trio straightened away for the linish. Sweep came through on the i inside and left the struggling pair of pacemakers behind witli every stride. Harleythorpe carried Grasmere along at such a terrific pace the first half mile that the latter began running amuck at the bend, lirst colliding violently with the leader and then darting over to the outside and impeding his stable companion. At the most critical moment of the nice a disastrous collision between the pair was averted by Butwells warning shout to Scoville. who pulled off and straightened out his mount just in time. Candieborry. which had licen taken off the ears onlv a couple of hours before the rich race was scheduled to be decided, ran phenomenally well. From a slow beginning witli an inside position, he was possibly more seriously affected by the crowding at the start than, any other contestant and during the early miming was next to last, securely pocketed behind n solid wall of horses. It was not until the homestretch was reached that the Wilson colt found an opening and his closing sprint was of the electrifying kind. The Canadian representative. The General Armstrong, also developed a Imlated and remarkable burst of speed and Hashed towards the front so rapidly in the last furlong that it attracted the attention of thousands of spectators. A tremendous amount of money was bet on the Keene pair at odds-on. Both liad shown such phenomenally fast trials just before the big race that the public virtually ignored the remaining eleven Mnrters, including the much advertised Candleborry and Barleythorpe. James It. Keene and traine; Kowe were supremely confident of winning and the public had been taken into their confidences, so most of the IKMKK spectators could see nothing lint Sweep and !rasmere in the race. The demonstration of applause which greeted the victor has seldom been surpassed. For the first time in two years, the top tier on the roof of tint mammoth grandstand was packed with people anxious to view lie -struggle from the only point of vantage possible. .lames It. Keene said after the race that he was satisfied that he had a good horse in Sweep, notwithstanding that he lacked size. By winning the Futurity. James R. Keene becomes the leading winning owner on the New York tracks. S. C. Hildreth, who is still at the head of the American owners list for IPO!, has heretofore led Mr. Keene ou the eastern tracks, but the outcome of the Fiituritv relegates him to second place, so far as the east is concerned. The Keene horses have now won .SI8 this season, while Ilildreths winnings on the New York tracks total 1,022. First moiiev in the Futurity amounted to -1.100, and Mr. Keene received ,000 additional as the nominator of the winner and 00 for having nominated the third horse. Grasmeres share of the purse amounted to ,835. Overnight nominations for todays card were light. The adding of .lack Atkin. Hose Jueen and Arondack materiallv enhanced the importance and interest of the Fall Handicap, at six and a half furlongs. The race, developed a brilliant contest between the top-notchers in the sprinting division. Besom, fresh from a series of successes at Saratoga, proved the dominant factor in the race. The l!en I.rush gelding could have taken the lead away from Rose Queen at will, but Grand patiently abided his time and mnde his linal stretch bid more effective and certain, lie Mund was a greatly improved horse and finished a half length in front of the overburdened and Inadequately ridden Jack Atkin. Barney Schreibers horse ran a wonderful race under the circumstances and the disappointed owner remarked to jockey Nicol afterwards: "You are getting too old for the game. Just as I am."
