SHEEPSHEAD MEETING ENDS FALL RACING AT BAY COMES TO CLOSE UNDER IDEAL CONDITIONS. King James Carries 136 Pounds to Victory in the Omnium Handicap Livonia Beats Good Held in the Great Eastern. I New York. September 13. This was the closing lay for 1009 at Sheepshead Bay track. Climatic ami track conditions were perfect and the splendid race course never looked more .inviting. The cam was wortbv of the occasion. So was tbe crowd. When King James carried bis stupendous burden ot 130 pounds to victory in tlie Omnium Handicap at a mile and an eighth, the spectators arose en masse to render spontaneous tribute to the reigning monarch of tbe turf. The prowess ot S. C. Ilildreths great horse had frightened out all but one of the tventyrsix other cligibles for the race. Wise Mason aloue had the temerity to measure strides with the champion. It is a fact that he literally did so for a full mile of the course to the intense excitement of the throng. Then King James suddenly dispelled tbe illusion that there was real contention by striding away from his opponent on the turn as if the latter had been anchored and. while Wise Mason afterwards closed some of the gap, it was only on sufferance, as King James was leisurely loafing with a comfortable lead to tbe finish. Everything considered, tbe race was run in fast time, today mark of 1:52 having been beaten but once in the twenty-tive years of the running of this celebrated stake, which feat was accomplished when Firestone, carrying only 100 pounds, won it last year in 1:31s. Another famous stake decided during the after-noou was the Great Eastern, a handicap for two-year-olds over the Futurity course. Though a handicap in which eleven starters were engaged, ranging from Dalmatian, top weight at 124 pounds, to Livonia, at 87 pounds, whose impost was increased by a live-pounds penalty incurred since the publication of the weights, the race developed into a onesided affair. It was a case of Livonia first and tin rest nowhere at all stages. The brilliant Star Shoot Woodray Ally had been seriously under-rated and figuratively speaking, bad been pitchforked Into tbe race. Because of the muddy going which prevailed on the occasion of Livonias preceding brilliant victory, the public was not inclined to take her seriously, but the smart set without hesitancy did so, with the result that the layers suffered a scorching. The heroic and overburdened Dalmatian loomed up Hearing the Mulsh with his usual cyclonii closing, effort. It was a remarkable achievement for bijn to save, third place behind the rejuvenated Fauntleroy. which ran like a crackerjack. The latter jaded-looking youngster of the Saratoga meeting is again In the pink of condition and is worth confederation from now on in any company. Canipeon, a three-year-old maiden, began proceed- ings with a decisive win over such good ones as Jeanne dAre, Black Mate. Dr. Waldo Briggs and Pantoutie. He ran for the lirst time in the name and Colors of E. II. Jennings. James Blute prepared anil saddled him for todays surprising effort. Racegoers could liot help but hark back to Campeons last defeat when a "hot favorite at Saratoga, lage rode him a bad-looking race on that occasion. This afternoon, for a change, Etherial was entrusted to a jockey capable of handling him to advantage. The result, with Butwell up. was a victory at a mile over opponents of superior class in 1:38. Jockey Glass bad an extra good horse under bitn in Blackford when, he won the mile and a sixteenth race over the grass course. Charley Quinns beautifully-bred gelding by Clifford Black Venus nearly tumbled to his knees in a collision at the start and Glass ran him into a pocket after that. Ills survival of the last half mile of heart-breaking effort to recover the ground lost early in the running, stamps the winner of more than useful caliber. The usual betting coup materialized in the closing lace, a dash for juvenile maidens over the five and a half furlongs straightaway. Captain Morris, a newcomer hereabouts, proved the successful but lucky medium. II. M. Zieglers Ashwell came near to upsetting the good thing, which lasted to win by inches. The Coney Island Jockey Club has bad a successful and profitable meeting, considering the limitations of tbe sport under the oral betting system. There is no comparison between last years fall meeting and the one that ended today. Only a handful attended the races last year, while this season crowds that compared favorably with the open betting ring days turned out. especially on Saturday and holidays. Anyone entertaining doubt of tbe firm basis the sport now rests on would have had his mind disabused Saturday. A more representative or enthusiastic crowd has not been seen at any track in any year. Barney Scbreiber was asked by a prominent turf-lnau today to prlee Jack Atkiu. "Ill sell everything I have but Jack -Atkin. That horse shall never go out of my hands for any consideration," replied the master of Woodlands. "There isnt a better stud prospect in the world than he. and to my way ofthinking he is worth ten times more to urn than to anyone else." Charles Hughes, witli the Ziegler horses.- and Peter Coyne, with Arcite. Don Antonio, Relluf, Dominica and others of George Longs stalde, have about ended their eastern campaign and will ship to Louisville this week. Sweep has not been worked or seen on the track since September 5. It looks as if the Futurity winner lias been retired for the season. Edward- Corrigan, looking hale and hearty, was a visitor at Sheepshead Bay today.
