NOTES OF THE TURF. Bertha E. is so bad an actor that her further entry will be refused at the DulTerjn Park- meeting, now in progress at Toronto. John Carey,, for many years officially connected with the Crescent City Jockey Club, will do the starting at a number of fair meetings throughout Louisiana this fall. John Dyment. whose crack colt. Star Wave, fell a victim of pneumonia at Sheepshead Bay last week, will return from New York to Toronto for the opening of the Ontario Jockey Clubs fall meeting next Saturday. Barney Schreiber has an idea that Jack Atkin will do well racing over a greater distance of ground than he has been asked to go of late, and trainer Powers probably will try him out at a mile and an eighth or farther at Gravesend. M. J. Leonards cross-country horse. Rufus. will be fired and turned out for the remainder of the metropolitan racing season. Rufus ruptured a tendon and trainer Silas Veitch decided to resort to the firing irons in an effort to restore the Star Ruby geldings leg to a normal condition. Jockey Ganz. who is riding well at Blue Bonnets. Is apprenticed to the St. James Stable, weighs 92 pounds and has been in the saddle for only live months. He is 17 years of age. and the showing that he has licen making is especially good for u iiov who never rle in u race until last May. The lad will doubtless make his mark on the turf. Racquet, favorite in the first race at Sheepshead Bay Sattirdnv. came back after the finish with a cut on his near hind leg about an inch and a half long and half an inch-deep. Trainer Byer is of the opinion that he was hurt in the crowding immediately after the start, and ho believes that the pain It caused prevented Racquet from running to form. It. J. Trainer Ed Whyte. who handles the horses of Mr. Mackenzie. left Direct at loronto when he shipped Toureipie and The General Arm-Strong to the Sheepshead Bay course.
