LATEST IN "NIGHT RIDING" CASE. New York. September 13. According, to the best of. authority John Strobel and. "Whitey" Thomas, the "night riders" under arrest for working: the two-year-old,- Ostend. are ready to confess. Negotiations with that end in view have been going on. and the prisoners have been weakening slowly but surely. When the case came before Magistrate Voorheos on Friday. Strobel was. also charged with petty larceny for taking jockey Butwells saddle.. The "night riders" secured a postponement after askiiur in vaiii lor a lawyer whose name they said was Tobiu. At the jail afterward, it is said, several detectives-interviewed Strobel and one of them said to him: "Why dont you tell all you know about this business Instead of goini up for the rest of your life 5" "Jf I could. I would." replied Strobel. so the story goes. "But I am not the main guy. Whltey Thomas framed the whole, thing up arid can tell whos behind him. 1 wish he would, too. so that 1 can , get out of this place," When Thomas, was subjected to a cross-fire of questions bv the sleuths he denied at lirst that! there . was anybody of Importance behind the plan to defraud the racing public, but as the pressure became stronger he finally declared, so the detectives sav: "16 I can get a guarantee that T will not be tried by a jurv. on the grand larceny charge Ill squeal. Hut I must get a guarantee first, because I dont want to tell what I know1 and then go to prison anvwav. So all youve got to do is. to square this thing for me and see that I am not tried. Then Ill tell von the name of the man who framed up the night riding and who has been profiting by it. but lias left us in the lurch."
