-77-- r . y.S; , I CASTLET01M STUDS LATEST BRILLIANT ACQUISITION : JAMES R. KEENES CH. C, 4, CELT, BY COMMANDO MAID OF ERIN. . Celt, having now been retired to Castloton. and Coiin being destined to follow him. it will not be long hefore James R. Keene can gloat over having four grandly-bred sons of Commando in his famous stud Peter Pan. Hippodrome, Colin and Celt. It would be pretty hard to convince him that he could have an overabundant representation of the house of,Ioniino at Castleton, and as these horses differ in their maternal lines of descent, it may be that, their installation in his big Kentucky establishment will prove a measure of great wisdom. I!y common consent and by proof of his racing, Celt was one of the best racers ever sent out from Castleton and but little inferior to his invincible stablemate, Colin. Unluckily early lameness interfered with a brilliant career on the track and enforced his too early retirement to the stud. He was not raced much, having started in but six races, twice as a two-year-old. twice as a three-year-old and twice as a four-year-old. As a two-year-old lie ran second to Colin in the Flatbush Stakes at Sheepshead Day and won the Junior Champion Stakes at Graveseud. defeating Uncle, Meclick and Firestone. As a three-year-old he won the Jockey Club Weight-for-Age Race at Belmont Park, de feating Jack Atkin and Dorante at a mile and an eighth, run in 1:52. Then he won the Brooklyn Handicap, with 100 pounds up. with great ease in 2:04J, with Fair Play, 90 pounds, second: Master Robert, !5. third, and King James, 98, lapped on Master Robert, fourth. Then he spread a hoof and retired for the year. Last spring he was reported to he a sound horse and trained favorably. He made his. first appearance in a race for a purse at Relmont Park, Slay 27, and won in a canter from Choirmaster of Ches-terbrook and Homecrcst. This was in the way of preparation for the Brooklyn Handicap, ran June .1. lie was a l-to-3 favorite, but King James won, with Restigouche second and Celt a badly-beaten but game third. Shortly after the race it was discovered that his old infirmity had beset hltn again. A persistent but vain effort to restore him to racing condition was made. Finally Ids case was, given up as hopeless. Ilis record and his pedigree are as follows: I Eclipse . , J Alarm " Maud " Ilitnyar "j Lexington , " , , I Hlra....
