RACING AFFAIRS ACROSS IN ENGLAND. Mlrador Fails in His Trial Race for the St. Leger Winning Owners, Horses and Riders. London, Eng.. September 4. Something in the way of a mild surprise developed at Derby this week, when William Clarks The Whirlpool defeated William Astors useful colt, Mlrador.- in the Breeders St. Leger. at a mile and three furlongs. Slira-dor is a chestnut colt by Marco Semitone, and because he hiul won the Northern Derby at Newcastle. Zetland Plate at Newmarket. Great Northern Leger at Stockton and Zetland Plate at the same place without aii intervening defeat, was deemed to have at least an outsiders chance in the Doncaster St. Leger. But this chance was diminished perceptibly when at the end of rather an exciting struggle The Whirlpool defeated him by three parts of a length for the valuable. Breeders St. Leger, it being worth ,910 to the winner. Mirador was the favorite at It has frequently happened that a jockey has reached his hundred winning, mounts for the season at the Derbv September meeting, and it seemed in every wav likely that F. Wootton would have that experience at the gathering that came to a close on Thursday. He did not quite reach his hundred there, however, but did so yesterday at Lewes, where he had a successful time of it and accounted for three of the four races in which he rode. Wanting- just one point, it was very appropriate that he should gain it on his fathers colt. Tyrconnel. in the Selling Nurserv Handicap, and tills success he supplemented with victories on Slintor and Peterloo. The prize money at the Baden-Baden meeting was divided ill the proportion, roughly, of two-thirds to German stables and one-third to French stables, the Germans winning about 1909.sh0,500 to the $:I5.750 of i the Gallic invaders. The Imperial Graditz Studs stable Gernianv was the biggest winner, nine of Its representatives securing races worth in the aggregate about 5,000. France came second, SI. Veil-Picard being credited with nearly 0,000 and Germany a good third, Herr Weudhofs three winners bringing in ,750.
