Rather an amusing incident occurred during the betting on the Derby feature. One book had posted a price against Lomond for place, and a young Texan came along with a monstrous roll. "Ill take a thousand of that," he said, motioning to the place price on the favorite. The bookmaker gasped. "Huh J" was all he could say. "A thousand." repeated the Texan. Impatiently. "Oh, I couldnt take that," explained the bookie. "Ill take a hundred." "Take two hundred." said the Texan. "Xo." the man on the box repeated. Then rub it off your slate," demanded the disgusted Texan, who evidently had an idea that he was dealing with a real bookmaker.
