It was run at a mile and an eighth that year; but was made a dash of a mile and a quarter the following year and has been run at that distance ever since. The best race horse that ever won it was the several times Derby winner, Claude, which was first in 1904, with 124 pounds up, the greatest weight ever carried successfully in the race.
