Montreal, Que., September 17. The races at Blue Bonnets this afternoon were run over a dcej and heavy track. This, of course, meant that horses that did not fancy that sort of going had no chance. Shortly before post time for the opening dash rain came down in torrents, but It soon cleared and for the remainder of the afternoon the sun shone brightly. Small fields ruled and most of the winners led their opponents at tbe finish by extensive margins. In the feature race three of the intending starters were forced to be absentees because of .their dislike for the heavy going. Their elimination m,ade it a match race between Theo Cook and Charlie Eastman. The former was at odds-on and justified the short price at which - he was held by an easy victory. The steeplechase over the short course was closely contested for the ilrst round by Ballycastle, Dr. Koch and Class Leader, but after the tenth hedge the first-named pair drew away from Class Leader and fought out the issue. Ballycastle won rather handily. Class Leader was the favorite, but performed poorly and can do much better. Dr. Ji F. Aitken, the other .starter, came to grief at the fourth jump. Surprises - were frequent and began with the opener, when Detroit won with consummate ease. P. T. Chlnns losing streak was broken when Lucetta ran away from a fair band of two-yearrolds, including Autumn Girl. "Twelve ordinary platers accepted the issue in the third race. Occidental dashed into a long lead early and was never thereafter headed, winning in a romp from Alice George, with the favorite. C. AA. Burt, in third place.
