IMPROVEMENT AT CHURCHILL DOWNS. Programming of Good Card Results in Increased Attendance and Speculation. Louisville. Ky., September 20. There was marked improvement iu the sport at Churchill Downs this afternoon, as a result of the good card that was provided. The largest crowd of the meeting witnessed the racing and the speculation exceeded that of any day since the opening. Sunimerlike weather contributed to the enjoyable outing of the spectators. Evenly balanced fields produced close contests and the finishes in some instances were of the hair-raising variety, the final stride determining the winner. All Red and Colloquy fought a stretch duel for the purse iu the feature race. All Rod gaining the verdict by a scant margin. The Johnson colt trailed his opponents for the first half mile and came with a great burst of speed in the stretch. The hottest finish was in the closing race, in which some of the crack youngsters here were engaged. Captain Morris, from Henderson and Hogans string, won by a neck, with noses separating Ben K. Sleet, Donau and Gallant Pirate in the order named. The latter probably was best, but suffered carly Interferenee. Maid Militant furnished the principal surprise by taking the third from Orlandot and Mamie Algol. Roseboro led home a fair band of platers in the fifth. Including Greenbridge and Warden. The latter was making his first start since his acquisition by W. J. Young. Gemmell outclassed his opposition in the second and gave his backers no concern, winning in a canter. The erratic Eva Tanguay handed the form students a jolt when she decisively outpaced Rowland Otis from barrier rise to .finish In the opening race. W. O. Parmer was among todays arrivals from Hamilton, en route to his farm in Nashville, where he will remain several days before returning to Windsor for the race meeting which will begin there October 11.. Doubt as to racing in California this season was dispelled by the receipt of a telegram by starter Jake Holtman from Percy W. Treat, secretary of the New California Jockey Club, advising that Thomas H. Williams had announced that the winter riiciiK woud begin ou the Oakland track in San Francisco November 20. Williams, who sustained :i fractured skull in falling from Ball Hazard yesterday, was reported as Improved at a late hour this afternoon and the doctors feel hopeful of his ultimate recovery unless complications set in. Henderson and Hogan have announced that they will ship a big string to race at the Juarez track this winter.
